BIRD Energy Open for Grant Proposals

    About BIRD

    BIRD Foundation, the Binational Industrial Research and Development Foundation, is a US-Israel effort to fund bi-national R&D projects on an ongoing basis. The organization funds about 20 projects a year – 800 since inception.

    Recently, BIRD announced the BIRD Energy initiative, which specifically focuses on funding US-Israel R&D projects in renewable energy. It is backed by the US Department of Energy (DOE), the Israeli Ministry of National Infrastructures and the BIRD Foundation. Projects are funded up to $1 million.

    BIRD Energy has already funded:

    • HelioFocus Ltd. & Capstone Turbine Corporation, CA –  Microturbine for Solar Applications
    • Motorola Israel Ltd. & SmartSynch, Inc., MS - IEMS – Intelligent Energy Management System
    • Tigo Energy (Israel) Ltd. & Architectural Glass & Aluminum Co., Inc. CA - BIPV Energy Maximizer System
    • TransBioDiesel & The Purolite Company, PA - The Development of Lipase Carriers for Enzymatic Production of Biodiesel
    • CellEra Technologies Ltd. & CommScope, Inc., NC
    • Desalitech & GE Global Research, NY

    Project Criteria

    To be considered, a project proposal should include:

    • R&D cooperation between two companies or cooperation between a company and a university/research institution (one from the US and one from Israel)
    • Innovation in areas such as: Solar Power, Biofuels, Advanced Vehicle Technologies, Wind Energy, Smart Grid or any other Renewable Energy/Energy Efficiency technology
    • Significant commercial potential; the project outcome should lead to commercialization

    1. Executive Summaries (using BIRD’s template) – March 26, 2010
    2. Full Proposals (following BIRD’s detailed instructions) – May 31, 2010
    3. Decisions – End of July 2010
